there's no question of moving out of the front end because i don't want to, so it's between staying a sacker and becoming a checker (cashier, for those of y'all who don't live in texas).

sacker:
more exciting. sees more customers and more other workers. walks around, looking for where she'll be most useful. sorting groceries into sacks on the fly? is fun. it's kinda like tetris.

but a sacker has to go outside more. it's REALLY hot outside.

plus, i'm an excellent sacker. i'm valuable because i'm fast, efficient, intelligent, enthusiastic, etc. and i do a really good job of sacking too (i'm not saying it takes a lot of intelligence to do that, but the fact is many people don't).

checker:
pays more. is a position of slightly more... trust? gets to stay in the ac all day.

but has to stay mostly in the same position, which might make it harder to chat and watch managers, which i love to do.

on the other hand, it MIGHT not be harder to watch the managers... they're right there in front of you more or less. and when you need authorization or checks or whatever you get to call them over.

i'd be a new checker though, and as such, less valuable, i would imagine. there are checkers with great amounts of experience. i don't have that. i might consequently get fewer hours.

Personally, I love being a cashier (although, granted, the fabric store I work at doesn't have sackers). I stay in the same place all shift long, but I interact with tons of customers.

And once you've cashiered long enough to know all of the policies, I'm sure you'd be fast and efficient enough to make up for your lack of experience when it comes time to schedule hours . ..

well, we're kind of overstaffed as a general situation. maybe the cashiers are sort of under for some times of day or they're planning to move some up soon--that would make me not lose hours. i've asked our hr person though.

perhaps you could ask about the hours situation before you decide?

being a cashier can be a lot of fun, too, but then we don't have sackers so I wouldn't know how much fun being one could be. go with what feels right to you, can't be wrong!

I liked being a cashier, but then started to hate it because, blah, I wasn't getting any hours, and blah, my ops manager hated me, and blah, I hated the hours... but cashier can be really fun, and when it's slow you get interaction with other employees and such. Home Depot didn't have sackers... but I think if you really like sacking and you don't really want to check, you should stay in your current position.

i'm leaning towards checking currently but it sounds like it might be more like 15 hours or twenty instead of twenty-two to twenty-six a week. it pays more but i don't think it pays THAT much more. however, it depends how many people want to move up.
