jenny told me that some chick she used to work with told her she taped garlic cloves to her face at night to remove acne. the garlic 'drew out whatever was in' the pimple, according to this chick.

i just don't get folk remedies. why would you think a plant bulb had the power to magically draw infected whatever-it-is out THROUGH your pores? i mean, whose idea was this the first time anyone did it? and why did they KEEP doing it?

My grandmother used to swear that sliced uncooked potatoes would draw out stuff like splinters. I don't know that it ever worked. It is weirdly entertaining to try to figure out where people came up with this stuff, though.

I just did a paper on herbs and one of the sections was on old medical uses. People are crazy! They used to use fennel to try to cure EVERYTHING - turns out it has no medicinal uses at all, it just smells nice. If you want a good laugh, go find Culpepper's book on herbs at the library. The stuff this guy advocated is fucking scary!

*snort* People are nuts. Another question: How in heaven's name did people discover some of the ways that that you can get high? Like, for example, licking the back of a frog (from Ellen DeGeneres), or sniffing the gas from whipped cream bottles, or smoking hemp? I can just imagine somebody trying these things out:

Person 1: "Hey, I heard that Kelly put garlic on her face to get rid of her acne. Did it work?"

Person 2: "Not in the slightest, but she said it made her high as hell!"

Or something of the sort. *ponder*
