both wax and i have been gone because our internet has been down for more than twenty-four hours.

why?

the MPAA emailed cease and desist to the student network because of wax's torrent of the manchurian candidate screener, which was at fucking 99.8%, aka about TWO MORE SECONDS when they complied and shut it down. luckily there's no such thing as UTU disciplinary action, which is what the fucking mpaa demanded, but to get the internet back i had to mail them a promise that i wouldn't run any more filesharing over their network.

we still have about a week to wait for our private connection, which we got for its lack of throttle, but it looks like we're without shows until then unless people put them on yousendit. fucking asdf¤¤%&"4. luckily we already had a copy of the movie.

also, we're both experiencing shopping hangovers from yesterday.

fuckfuckfuckfuck aöslfjösldfjaa.

i know. and gr! it's not like we want to steal the movie. we're going to buy it. the dvd isn't out yet! we went to see it twice in the theater!

only now, what i really want to do is buy a chinese pirate and a big stack of blank cds and offer to mail a copy to anybody who gives me their address. it's good for the mpaa that i don't have any blank cds and am suffering a shopping hangover.

Exactly. I downloaded Alfie and I <3 Huckabees because I'm swamped with work and no way am I getting out to the theatre to see them, but they're crap, dude! Alfie is a screener with some green scenes still left in and Huckabees was shot with a video camera. I love Jude Law. Of course I'm going to buy the DVDs when they come out. They'll get their damn money then.

i think the greedy bastards think you should go to the movie every time you want to see it before it's out but unless you're rich, that NEVER happened. it's not like movie piracy interferes with THAT. you just saw it once or twice or whatever and then sat about waiting. in fact having a download helps keep the love alive, you know? we can't afford to go OUT and watch the manchurian candidate once a week until it comes out, but thanks to our poor-quality telesync and consequent mutual squeeing episodes, we're way pumped to buy it and we're STILL all excited about it and if we could, would have (until yesterday!) talked lots more people into seeing it, if we could. i mean, we already had tried and everything.

What the hell?! I didn't know they were tracing individuals that closely. Thank goodness of private ISP.

Well, see, with bittorrent it's really easy to track you. All they have to do is go on suprnova, click on a torrent and write down the number of every poor sucker who's connected to the swarm. Then they write threatening emails to their providers and bob's your fuckin' uncle. It takes them like five minutes, I bet.

They can threaten private ISPs too, I'm sure. It's probably easier to put pressure on a university, though. But I am not downloading any more screeners. I think TV shows and older movies are safe for now.

Yes, it'd be very easy, indeed. I never did really think about of it before. Thankfully, I'm more into TV series, too, I don't have to worry about it too much.

Argh. That's good to know - I think I'll be avoiding bittorrent like the plague from now on, at least when new movies are involved.

Still, this whole thing makes me go seriously WTF and bang my head against a metaphorical wall. Grrrr. Does MPAA ever do anything reasonable or useful? No.

I think they're just having a crackdown. Or maybe it's routine. They do rate movies and stuff. And... stuff.

I think it's just not safe in general to download new movies. They have their wily ways. The best way for us to get our mitts on illegal shit is to do it privately. The bigger the system, the greater the risk. FTPing files off your buddy's home machine is totally fine. That just requires you to have a buddy with access. Basically, start your own little warez ring. Tiddelipom. ::sigh:: They drive us to ever greater acts of deviousness.

wax and i tentatively plan an ftp server. of course for those to work, people who have sneaky good methods have to be able to get hold of them.
