i really, really enjoyed 'the six napoleons.' i was giggling and shrieking and gasping the whole way through. it was hilarious. and it had plenty of good shots of brett-as-holmes's face, which i value highly. (::purrrr::.)
low point: the guest stars' plot is introduced/interwoven from the beginning and is pretty hard to follow. it's also entirely in italian, not subtitled. even my (good? competent? ...) knowledge of spanish didn't enable me to follow it. it was rather muffled and generally very quick.
high points: LESTRADE. omg. how i <3 him! this ep made me fully realize. he's such an adorable little rat. i want to hug him and squeeze him and make up pet names for him! i want h. and w. to befriend him, have him over for brandy often, and make him feel intelligent (which in fact he is--just not in comparison to h.--in comparison to whom, let's face it, no one is v. intelligent)!
other high points: watson coming over all dominating. h. clearly thinks this is adorable--raises eyebrows, has to hide smile behind teacup (pictures inside!). also h. running roughshod over poor l. in the morgue: 'you won't mind if i keep this little photo?' 'but that might be an important piece of evidence!' 'i should certainly hope so; otherwise it would be of no use to me.' and poor lestrade just gapes as h. walks away with his evidence. also, h. and w. come home silently to discover l. sneaking surreptitious peek in h.'s notebook. h. puts finger to lips and motions w. to look. they put heads together and share a fond smirk. then h. puts a hand on w.'s shoulder and they tiptoe away to make a louder entrance.
one more high point: the last scene. h. almost tears up. and i almost did too.
slashy?: hoo boy. lots of shared looks and whatnot in this one, plus watson's Yes I'm Jolly Well The Top Even If He's Smarter act. over tea. did i mention?

holmes and watson are obviously having lestrade over for either dinner, or an after-dinner snifter. others sip; holmes broods. quite fetchingly, i might add.

l. having explained that someone's going about smashing plaster busts of napoleon, watson is explaining about obsession and making the 'crazy' gesture to illustrate.

holmes is having his morning tea (or coffee) when watson walks in to tell him of an urgent wire from lestrade.

come along! he says forcefully. right away. the carriage is waiting. he spins about in the door, pointing as he does so, 'two minutes!' and turns on his heel and leaves again.

holmes looks after him with great fondness, a quirking eyebrow and whatnot, that fond little smile that he hides in the rim of his cup. he has not uttered much at all. he clearly thinks watson ischarming adorable hot in that well hello mister masterful want to go back to bed? way charming.

in the morgue, examining the body of the assassin with a magnifying glass. (after he leaves, lestrade will lean over where he was and frown, trying to guess what he was looking at, and then shrug and turn away.)

'you won't mind if i keep this little photograph, lestrade?' 'but that might be an important piece of evidence?' 'i certainly hope so, otherwise it shall be no use to me.'

he keeps the solution a secret til the end but can never resist telling watson that he's got it.

lestrade got bored waiting, so he takes a peek in holmes's notebook. (!!! isn't he the cutest little rat?)

holmes sees lestrade snooping and gestures for watson to look too. they exchange an amused smirk and then creep away and come back more loudly.

h. wakes l. from a wee nap. time to go to the stake out!

beppo breaking his last statue!

and the actual last statue is broken by mr. holmes--not before he performs the tablecloth trick. (i tried five or eight times to cap it using pause, even, but no luck.) and inside it is a famous black pearl which was stolen the year before.

h. and l., not unnaturally, break out in applause--since they have believed h. to be totally insane from the stakeout* straight through the visit from the previous owner of the last bust of napoleon, which turns out to contain the pearl. l. makes up his mind to make a speech. he tells h., 'you know what we say of you at the yard? we're not jealous of you! we're proud of you.' he says there's not a man there who wouldn't be glad to shake h.'s hand.

h. says 'thank you!', surprised, and then pauses. focus on his face. the minutest flickers of expression may be traced. his lip and eye quiver and he says again--'thank you.' then he and l. shake hands, and the latter does leave.

h. gets out his violin and begins to play. w. settles into a chair and lights up his pipe--it's a picture of domestic contentment.fade to black with a heart-shape.
*h. warns w. to bring 'rugs' (blankets) on the stakeout, presumably because it will be cold. when they're waiting around, rugless, watson sneezes. h. seems lost in thought but says 'if you have caught a cold, watson, it is your own fault. i told you to bring the rugs.' w. and l. seem resigned. l. asks if it is one yet. w. produces a pocket watch and nods. then he starts to offer l. a snack from a paper bag--as l. reaches out for one, h. interrupts impatiently, 'this is no time for [name of snack], watson!' and w. folds the bag up again. no one snacks.

They looked like hard candy.

I can't get over how great this episode is. Loved the recap.
