it has been mentioned that i should journal this, so:

i still remember trying to explain to my mother for the first time about slash.  (she already knew about fanfiction in general at this point.)  i was just an nsync slash reader--i only had the foggiest idea that there was a huge world of fps out there.

so after i had been explaining for a few minutes, she said something like, "oh--is that like what people used to write about kirk and spock?"

and then i was like, "huh? oh, that might ring a bell, someone might have mentioned that,"

and then she gave me a vague my-mom-ish introduction to kirk/spock slash, and then i googled, and then i started watching star trek a little while later.

the end!

So you got into ST because of slash, not the other way around?

well, no, not really. i grew up on the next generation; i just didn't have any particular interest in the original series, which was just as well because it wasn't running on any of the major networks until i was in high school. but i started watching TOS after reading an academic paper about TOS slash, yeah--with an eye to reading some of the aforementioned slash. :)

So awesome! My mom found out about my involvement in fanfic and slash by putting my name into DejaNews back in '96 when I was active on alt.sex.fetish.startrek (as the TrekSmut newsgroup was called back then).

my mum found out about me and slash back when i was a wee thing and she read my notebook. iirc her words were "i really don't think they'd appreciate you writing that about them. what would you thnk if people were writing that about you?"

i guess that's one of the natural gut reactions to it that a lot of people have. i'm assuming you started with RPS, then?

yeah, for a long time i couldn't get into the hang of FPS. i kinda did for a while there before retreating back to RPS.
