this is the scene from star trek:tos 1x26: "the devil in the dark" with the odds conversation referenced in my icon.  it's one of my favourite funny kirk/spock scenes.  so. cute.  as i was making this i was thinking i should have made more caps, but really, i do tend to go overboard.

KIRK:  i will lose no more men.  the creature will be killed on sight and that's the end of it.
SPOCK: very well, sir.
KIRK: [a little gently, but with his tough face on] mr spock... i want you to assist scotty in maintaining that makeshift circulating pump.

SPOCK: [looking very taken aback, and then hurt, blinking] i--i beg your pardon, sir?

KIRK: you heard me.  it's VITAL that we keep that reactor in action. your scientific knowledge--
SPOCK: [very earnestly]--is not needed there, sir.  mr scott has far more knowledge of nuclear reactors than i do!  you're aware of that.
KIRK: mr spock--you are second in command.  this will be a dangerous hunt. either one of us, by himself, is expendable.  both of us are not.
SPOCK: captain, there are approximately one hundred of us engaged in this search.  against one creature!  the odds against both you and i being killed are 2,228.7 to one.

KIRK: [raising his eyebrows a little] two thousand, two hundred and twenty eight... point seven... to one?

SPOCK: [nods quickly, eyes fixed hopefully on KIRK's face]

KIRK: [lets out a long breath and closes his eyes for a second] well, those are pretty good odds, mr spock.  [at this point he can't suppress a bit of a smirk]
SPOCK: [hastily] and they are, of course, accurate, captain--

KIRK: [still smirking] well, of course. [taking a breath and continuing in a brisk businesslike tone] well, i hate to use the word, but... logically, with those kind of odds... you might as well stay.  but, please, stay out of trouble, mr spock.

SPOCK: [innocent and surprised] that is always my intention, captain.

KIRK: [gives slow doubtful nod, cuts his eyes to the side]

there's also a later scene where the alien caves in a bit of cave while kirk and spock are conferring via communicator and spock loses his calm so far as to switch from yelling "captain!" to yelling "JIM!"  when kirk finally responds, spock advises him to kill the alien immediately, even though he's just five minutes past contradicted kirk's direct orders by telling the security agents to try to capture it.  when kirk calls him on it, he says impatiently, [why didn't i write this down?  have to paraphrase] "your life may be in immediate danger!"

eta: whole episode gallery (76 caps) here.

I always meant to get into Star Trek. My dad used to watch it and I saw one episode once that made me think.

Also, since it is like, the father of all slash. I owe it at least that.

But yeaaaah. I really enjoyed that. :) Thank you.

it's my one true show, one true pairing, one true pov character--i'm all, like, biased, so i won't argue in its favour. but i have all the dvds and as i start watching them i'll probably post more scene recaps.
