i'm never here because the sociology exam is in a week and i have a lot of reading that i'm never going to get done if i don't stay away from the internet. 

it might be my imagination, but i think the reading in swedish is getting a bit easier.

This is something I've meant to ask for a while, but how come you're learning Swedish instead of Finnish?

swedish is the second official language and there's a swedish-finn population of about 5% in finland. it's wax's native language and the language that her family speak, so i'm going to the city's swedish university. also, there's no way i could master finnish as fast since it isn't related to any language i know.

Ah, gotcha. I hadn't realised she was Swedish. Just assumed Finland = Finnish. Makes more sense now!

finland only has like 5 million residents, so the total number of swedish-speaking finns is under 300,000. everybody knows everybody else, or else is friends or cousins with someone who knows them, which has led to them calling themselves "the duck pond". they're also quite inbred. there's only one swedish-language newspaper for the entire country (well, proper newspaper, as opposed to school papers and stuff). ...so that's why most people haven't heard of them. :)
