i tried to make rice in the microwave.  i thought our dishes were microwave-safe because, well, they've always been in the microwave without doing anything untowards before.  but the result this time was a lot of burnt rice and a lot of smoke in the kitchen.  i've had to open the windows and shut the door.  and also, throw out another bowl.  i thought i could prevent it from cracking if i just used some very very hot water to get the rice out.  not so.  ouch.

and also, ew.

i should have a whole fucking tag for cooking misadventures.  at least nothing exploded this time.

A friend of mine seems to be cursed when it comes to making popcorn. She can do everything else fine, but she's never made popcorn without burning it. O_o

Well gosh, I was always pretty good at it. XD Maybe I have elite popcorn-making skillz?

Hmm, maybe that particular kind of rice isn't microwavable? It's weird that a bowl would suddenly turn on you like that.

If you've never tried it, I highly recommend making popcorn in a pot on the stove. All you need is the corn, oil and flavorings (the Vietnamese standard: melted butter, sugar, salt). It's a bit more clean-up but the difference in taste is OH MY GOD good.

i don't know for certain, but i suspect i just left it in too long--it was my fractions-math that was off, cause i only used 1/5 as much rice as her directions were for, so the time should have been probably less than half. i was all confused about how much it all was and i didn't stop and think it out, just sort of... blithely shaved a minute off.

i've never made popcorn in an actual pot. my parents always used a special popcorn popping machine. but personally i've always preferred the fake-butter flavour to real butter, and that's only obtainable with the microwave bags (or in the movie theatre!).

Oh dear.

This is the sort of thing that, when you read about, it's funny, but I bet it wasn't too funny at the time. :/

The only reason stuff like this doesn't happen to me is because I never cook. :D I just use the microwave for TV dinners and soup.

It's no fault of the dish's, man, you just didn't have enough water and left it in too long. Which is like why you can never leave shit alone in the kitchen when you're making it for the first time because you can't predict its behaviour. Food=dangerous, like Australian wildlife!
