so, i just found out that my one remaining great-grandfather died, but nobody thought to notify me until after mom got back from the funeral:

So, here I am back at school.  I went to Iowa to Grandpa's funeral over the weekend.

it's not that i'm really upset that they forgot, more like amused and kind of boggled.  i mean... yeah.  and i've never known him extremely well.  or seen any of my great-grandparents for years--and i think, wow, my whole life there have been four and now there's only one left alive.  the bitch.

:: boggle :: That's right up there with my mom's bizarre need to protect my fragile psyche from bad news when I'm taking exams. Because my grades are so much more important than, you know, knowing someone I love died. It's happened three times now! (The most memorable was my cat Pepper. He died December of my freshman year and they didn't tell me until after they'd picked me up from the airport for Christmas break and we were getting out of the car *in my garage*. And only then because I asked how he was doing, as I knew he'd been sick.)

wtf?

yeah.

so which is weirder--protecting your fragile emotional balance from big news or just completely forgetting that i might want to know?

Not telling your kids is odd, but just totally forgetting you *haven't* told them? I'm going to go with forgetting as being weirder.

But I still think our moms should have a bizarre habbits contest. Mine would win the "decorates with fake plants" and "afraid of talking about relationships" awards hands down :P
