i haven't properly listened yet, but from what i noticed it sounded very amusingly, um, 80s. or 90s. or whatever.

Yeah, you'll notice a huge difference. She really evolved over time. Back then she was a manufactured phenomenon (absolutely #1 top of the charts pop queen), but now she's much more in control of what she wants to sing. She's done a lot of growing up, too, some of it forcibly (divorce, mother's murder). I think that kicked the generic out of her.
