19 Jul 2003 10:44 amokay, so i walk into the library, dazed and willing sleepy, at ten a.m., and lean over the computer to bump the mouse and turn off the screen saver.
Volunteer Librarian: Are we not talking today?
Me (jumping in a dazed early morning manner, staring wide-eyed at her): hmm?
VL: Are we not talking today? GOOD MORNING.
Me (astonished, attempting a smile anyway): Oh! Good Morning.
I turn back to the computer and start AOL. Five seconds pass.
VL: I know it's always the courteous people who greet me first thing when they come in here. But I know there's lots of people who won't.
Me: (nods agreeably, trying not to raise eyebrows)
VL: But the thing is that it doesn't take any effort at all just to say 'Hello.'
Me (finally raising eyebrows for real. swallows first reply): That's true.
...and thus our conversation ended, until she decided i shouldn't drink my hot chocolate near the keyboard. in that instance, we were able to reach an accomodation with no lectures.
