I saw my hip dj pal Bell do this and I just had to copy. I've stolen her image-block format too because it's so pretty to look at (if you upload the album covers to LJ pictures, it will generate the minis if you choose thumbnails in the 'post to journal' dialogue). This was a little difficult, mainly because I have several different favorite genres and it's hard to compare albums across them, but after a few days of mental deathmatches I came up with this.
