on a day like today!

cimorenetoday i walked past those peruvian buskers who, in the summer, dress up in native dress with leather and feathers and dance while they play flutes. they were bundled up today against the weather, but they had a four-piece arrangement out there with a keyboard and a guitary thing and at least one flute, and they also had big speakers and a recording of themselves to play in between. i took my headphones out to walk down the no-cars part of universitetsgatan. also, there was a protest march, and two of the city's four mounted cops were out for it, in what looked like maybe the raincoat versions of their uniforms! i love the police here, but i love their uniforms even more. sometimes i lose sight of what americanness is, and so on, even being away from it, because it's easy to become blind to your own culture - like how is americanness different from oh - apple pie and football and smallville, and pepsi and mtv? but there is something else to america. i was thinking recently how dar williams's music, to me, captures america and americanness, at least all it means to me to be an american of my social group - and also she reminds me, in almost every song, of what i love about america. um. that was kind of random. there are things i love about america, though, plenty of them. although i'm more than happy not to live there.
one of the other students asked our spanish teacher how long she's lived in finland (she's mexican) and she said seventeen years. she doesn't go back to mexico anymore - she hasn't been in over four years now - although she used to go very frequently, like several times a year if she could, because now that her parents are dead she has less reason to, she said, and it's just harder. that struck something in me, though i don't know if i will become like that - and my parents shouldn't be dead in the next 16 years, either.
