new advice: don't sit up straight. or slouch, either. lean back! maybe the shoulders back part of it is still true. maybe the optimal healthy posture is reclining with your shoulders back! *image* link from [livejournal.com profile] bibliotech.

also, a us judge ruled that our paper currency discriminates against the blind because the notes are all the same size and texture. “Of the more than 180 countries that issue paper currency,” Judge Robertson wrote, “only the United States prints bills that are identical in size and color in all their denominations.” and typically, the government fought the suit for years with some really ridiculous arguments. link from [livejournal.com profile] isilya.

yesterday daddy emailed me to ask what the name of my school was - you know, the one i've attended for two and a half years now. the one that is named after the city i live in so every package they send me has "ÅBO" written in the address, and i go to åbo akademi.
wax: ...it's like they cannot be taught.
cim: how many conversations have i had with them about the pronunciation of "åbo" alone?

eta: on the serial comma or oxford comma, from the national public radio show a way with words. Finally, we offer this famous dedication, which appeared at the beginning of a book: "To my parents, the Pope and Mother Theresa." Nuff said.

how do you pronounce the name of your city?

and actually, this semester in vocal pedagogy, i have learned that 'shoudlers back' is not great for you. they should just be relaxed - unless you have some muscle tension issues that won't allow them to relax to the right place. in good posture, from the profle, your shoulders should align with the point where your skull meets your spine, your lumbar vertebrae, and your pelvis. i suppose that's more back than front. but we who tell people how to stand for singing have had to relearn the plan - no more saying, "shoulders back and down."

å is a long sound in the "o" family, and o is a short sound like "u" but edging towards "o". i eventually told my parents to pronounce it like "oboe" and switch the second vowel for an "oo" sound.

There are many versions of that book dedication floating around, but the funniest remains, "To my parents, Ayn Rand and God."

My husband tried the leaning back position and I found him asleep at the computer. Maybe I should suspend the computer from the ceiling and let him lie on his back.

i have an armchair next to the computer, but i often lean forward when something interesting happens! it's like automatic, to want to be close to the screen if it's interesting.
