a short dialogue-free sequence demonstrates how

SPOCK is reaching through the wall to exert mind-control over their guard.

KIRK is thinking, i suspect, something like "mmmm-HMM".

annotated scene:
KIRK is being held prisoner in the council chamber with the Fabulous Five Councillors, a secretary and four burly guards, two of whom are armed with disruptors.

CHIEF COUNCILLOR: oh no! what can i do? someone--please tell me! [he bows his head in anguish.]

GUARD #1 is overcome with sympathy and goes to offer CHIEF COUNCILLOR some lovin', but KIRK trips him on his way past, then lunges out of his chair, grabs GUARD #2 and shoves him into GUARDs #3 and #4, who go down like bowling pins.

with GUARD #2's disruptor, KIRK makes GUARD #1 drop his and herds all ten guys up against the door. he's facing them with one disruptor in each hand when the door opens and SPOCK leads a rescue party through.

SPOCK, admiringly and rather turned on: i had assumed you needed help--i see i am in error!

KIRK, grinning a grin that promises Things: oh, i need the help. [pointing ata broomcloset where they can make out the war room] in there, mr spock.
SPOCK turns his back on the bad guys and goes in the war room alone; KIRK puts down one disruptor and turns his attention to the communicator, leaving all ten guys with a pansy AMBASSADOR and two REDSHIRTS to guard them. surprisingly enough, this works out just fine.
later, spock says he thinks kirk's plan to bring peace to the planet might work, and kirk gives him

then in the closer scene, kirk talks suggestively about feeeelings, which flusters spock to the point of practically

KIRK: it was a calculated risk. still, the imenians keep a very orderly society and actual war is a very messy business--a very, VERY messy business. i had a feeling that they would do anything to avoid it, even talk peace.

SPOCK: [eyebrow quirk] a feeling is not much to go on...

KIRK looks sharply at him.

KIRK, with a flutter of eyelashes: sometimes a feeling, mr spock, is all we humans have to go on.

SPOCK: captain, you almost make me believe in luck.

KIRK grins flirtatiously.

KIRK: why, mr spock! you almost make me believe in miracles!

SPOCK has some difficulty suppressing a smile.
bonus: the vulcan nerve pinch, funny hats, wrathful kirk and some faces.

why is all of the interior design of the future always PINK?
