I want to like Torchwood and Doctor Who, but I've been finding it difficult lately, not to mention impossible to get excited about it. [livejournal.com profile] bibliotech gave a good explanation of why a few weeks ago. It hasn't even run for long enough to go back and watch the good ones over and over again - at least not for very long. One and a half good seasons isn't much, is it? I'm rather dreading the backlog of tw episodes and the new who episodes. Going from their records they're far more likely to prove an irritating disappointment than a pleasant surprise. It's just that when they were good TW and DW were so much fun - a nice modern fantasy in science fiction clothing, and I like modern sf/f the best - with bright colours and silly dialogue and effects and cheesy episodic plotlines reminiscent of 70s and 90s sf at its finest - and on top of that, jeans and Converse and. Neon seafoam-green jackets and ugly chav clothes. It was great fun. And it made me giggle every time I wore my red Converse, for a while there.

So I have similar problems with every other currently-running sff show that I've tried to watch except The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which I don't have too extraordinarily high hopes for, however, because they could so easily fuck it up next season, or cancel it right away. But at least the small hopes I have are in the optimistic direction, since it isn't cancelled yet, and it's just the sort of fun that lets me ignore and handwave away all kinds of low budget, lame dialogue, and plot inconsistencies. You can't go into skiffy and enjoy it if you're planning to look for holes in the pseudoscience, after all. I wonder if we should try watching that new vampire show, or... or... or something. There is a void in my life.

Have you watched the first two episodes of the new DW season yet? I've really enjoyed them, although we don't always like the same things in a show so that doesn't necessarily mean you'll like them. :/

No, I haven't yet. We still have a bit of a TW backlog to catch up on. I haven't been pushing the issue cause, like I said... dread. :|

If by that new vampire show, you mean Moonlight. Well. I watch it for the amusement factor, not for the stellar plot or anything. It doesn't take itself seriously at the beginning, does take itself a little seriously in the middle and towards the end of the current end of episodes, but they pulled out a twist I hadn't expected towards the end, too, and it impressed me a lot.

That said, the lady who plays Beth annoys the crap out of me, but that's not something I can really hold against the show. XD

Hmmm... well... how's the main dude? Engaging? Decent actor? Cool character? I know people are slashing the show. Which is at least one point in its favour.

You know, I actually stopped and thought about it for a moment and, yeah, for a vampire character he's not bad. I've no experience with the actor outside of Moonlight, but he's really good for being the lead character in a show that has a topic much dealt with in... well, everything. (Did that make sense? I hope it made sense.)

He's actually hugely enjoyable as a vampire - he doesn't wallow needlessly in the angst, even though he doesn't exactly revel in his vampiric nature, but he doesn't hesitate in pulling out the big guns in terms of being immortal when he needs to, either. He even dabbles near badass tendencies sometimes. XD

Moonlight doesn't push the boundaries in terms of vampirism, but nothing vampire-related currently isn't, in my opinion. But it's not a bad show, either, and it amuses the heck out of me.

I kind of want to tentatively poke the fandom now, ajhsjdhsjdhsajd.

I don't know what it's like at all - the fandom I mean - I just know that [livejournal.com profile] miriam_heddy has been talking about it. Perhaps she has some communities on her userinfo page. ... But you've pretty well decided me to try watching it now, anyway!
