cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (determined)
After last week's chat with [livejournal.com profile] bexless's lovely husband about Russell T. Davies and the future of Torchwood, last night I had a pretty amazing dream about it!

I dreamt that RTD left the show and they hired Joe Flanigan, Rachel Luttrell, and Jason Momoa, and made the show a crossover where they were still playing Sheppard, Teyla, and Ronon! The three of them had joined the main TW team in Cardiff, and in a shocking season finale, some completely unsuspected ninja bad guys walked up out of nowhere and assassinated Ronon right in front of the rest of the team's eyes as he was walking towards a building. It was like kind of mafia-ish. Sheppard and Teyla immediately called up Rodney, who was in North America working on Science still, and they went rogue/badass and set out to take the entire organization down - without the knowledge of the rest of the TW team, which was still just trying to find out what happened, not KILLKILLKILL.

(Wax pointed out that Jack would totally help, but he wasn't present in the dream - I think he was temporarily out when it happened, and Gwen was leading the team, which consisted of her, Tosh, Owen, and Martha. Man, I would love to watch that.) I didn't get to see the rest of the plot, though. They were actually all at a really fancy dinner gala when I woke up.

I identify strongly with River Song & Amy in the scene where they intervene in the matter of the Doctor's hat because that's what I'd like to do everytime I see people in public wearing Uggs and Crocs
8 (53.3%)

I don't identify with River Song, but I would gladly follow her example when it comes to wardrobe intervention
4 (26.7%)

I applaud River Song's quick thinking wrt the Doctor's hat that time, but in general, speaking for myself, I think it was a bit of overkill

Slashiness vs Writing Quality Scatterplot #1
(Big version here)

Please click for the bigger version. This is based on data taken from two polls performed by [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine, with the data in my tables taken out on 22 Feb 2009.

This plot follows the same format as my earlier graph here, which, of course, did not have any Science behind it, only me squinting at the screen and placing the dots by the seat of my pants. I've reversed the axes in this one, however, so that better-written canons are at the top of the graph and gayer ones to the right this time. I prefer placing slashiness and quality on the two axes so that there's one data point per show and one show per data point, which lets the interaction be more easily seen.

(ETA: The clearest example of skewing I see on the plot is Highlander. LOTR might be skewed, too, by people's childhood memories or something, I guess. But Highlander? Look at it! IT HAS THE SAME QUALITY SCORE AS SGA. I'm pretty sure that it's not just my personal... weirdness, or whatever, that wants to ROFL at that. SGA is bad, but it's not that bad.)

It should be noted that mean is only one measure of central tendency and, at these sample sizes - which is to say they're all rather small but they vary from fandom to fandom - it's important to look at the others as well. To that end, here is the table I used to generate the graph:

(big version here)

Median and mode (ie, the most popular rating) are just as interesting as mean in their own ways. Scanning down the standard deviation columns, a few of those numbers will jump out as extremely large, representing a much higher degree of disagreement on the rating in question: the slashiness of Supernatural (no surprise where the primary pairing is incest) and the quality of Merlin (I'm kind of at a loss for this one but there it is), for example.

It's well worth checking out the results in the two posts of [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine's where I took the data because you can easily see the bell curves for some questions, and distinguish others where the distribution shows much higher or lower consensus. (The Science of Slashiness & Moar Science!)

I want to like Torchwood and Doctor Who, but I've been finding it difficult lately, not to mention impossible to get excited about it. [livejournal.com profile] bibliotech gave a good explanation of why a few weeks ago. Whine and a severe lack of cheese ) So I have similar problems with every other currently-running sff show that I've tried to watch except The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which I don't have too extraordinarily high hopes for, however, because they could so easily fuck it up next season, or cancel it right away. But at least the small hopes I have are in the optimistic direction, since it isn't cancelled yet, and it's just the sort of fun that lets me ignore and handwave away all kinds of low budget, lame dialogue, and plot inconsistencies. You can't go into skiffy and enjoy it if you're planning to look for holes in the pseudoscience, after all. I wonder if we should try watching that new vampire show, or... or... or something. There is a void in my life.

Having three goatskin rugs in the house is somewhat like having three long-haired cats, though not quite as bad: we keep pulling goat hairs off our clothes and food. Yay.

Also, Gerard is no longer engaged according to a Norwegian article wax dug up here which is kind of criminally cute overall (and there are pictures of Gerard with Billy Tallent (well, just the singer) and a Norwegian chick there). I really feel sorry for the reporter who accidentally put her foot in that, though. She uses the word "painful" twice about the experience.

Also also, Frank totally groped Gerard's ass at the Helsinki concert last night that [livejournal.com profile] shiroi_chi went to. (I wouldn't have posted this before she has, but then I realised she's already called everyone who's on both of our friendslists who could possibly care, so whatevs.) She didn't catch it on film, though, and recounts that hardly anyone except her shrieked with joy, so now we must cross our fingers that someone has obtained photographic evidence.

I left bruises of glee on wax's arms. I might have cracked a rib. Her rib, that is. Not mine. But seriously... omg.

A note on recs, which you shouldn't read without having seen the episode. )

John Simm as The Master in Doctor Who: can the screen handle that much cuteness? I mean, picture John Simm and David Tennant glaring at each other. Like angry... thin, pointy, wee things1!

1. This simile may have been "angry kittens" in version 1.

...i miss my ipod so so much. maybe i can talk wax into coming with me to the computer store this afternoon and getting a usb 2.0 card. :/

last night V was over. he agreed to watch anything we liked, so we introduced him to torchwood with the recent episode involving time-travellers from the 1950s. we said we'd pause to explain anything that came up as we went along, and then when i mentioned doctor who it turned out he'd never heard of it, and we tried to summarise the entire thirty-something years of it in about five no doubt very confusing minutes. XD poor guy is a very good sport. wax also insisted, in the lulls in conversation, that i talk about the insane crack aus i've been reading in the professionals, and the first one of those i mentioned was the brigadoon one, which left him going "O.O?", especially when we tried to explain what purple prose was.

i was looking forward to statistics a lot because i loved it in high school, but i've realised now that it's going to be very different. this is a career-oriented class to teach social scientists the principles of statistics and how to use a point-and-click computer program that does the calculations for you, assuming we will need statistics professionally, but only as a certain element of our work. the lectures are theoretical; the only formula we've even seen is for standard deviation. and Professor DetDär is an adorable little white-haired dude, but his lectures are a bit repetitive and slow, which sucks at 8 am because it's really hard to stay awake.
cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (i kind of dig this)
so. where's the really awesome teamslutfic for torchwood?

this was an excellent week in tv, going in order of awesomeness: csi )

almost as fun was csi ny )

veronica mars has me tickled with its new recurring secondary characters and its clever season 3 replacement for wallace and his keys to the principal's office. it's hard to know if creepy or hot is cooler in a recurring character, but luckily they've got both bases covered )

studio 60 was kind of on notice from my good graces because of being occasionally tiresome and generally less funny than it should be, so when i heard it had been renewed my reaction was less "yay" and more "oh dear, now i have to keep watching". but this time i was entertained from beginning to end, so i take that back. oddly enough, though, )

although i enjoyed it very much i have less to say about criminal minds )

torchwood made me roll my eyes a lot in between the cute bits; it was agreed, generally, that it's about time for house to have a nemesis and that we heartily approve of their choice of nemeses; and i still think stand off has "cancel me" written all over it.

alan tudyk was on csi! ♥♥♥ csi )

kirsten vangsness is a regular on criminal minds as of season 2, so can she please have some more screentime? i'm just saying, it would make me so happy. criminal minds )

csi new york was eh. also, i'm seriously disappointed to learn that mac consumes vending machine cupcakes, because ew.

it snowed practically all day and all night. i want to take pictures, but i'm too lazy to go back outside by myself, and wax is very very busy knitting me a sweater vest. so perhaps we'll watch something instead.

last night we made [livejournal.com profile] anglepoiselamp and [livejournal.com profile] shiroi_chi watch the last two eps of csi:ny and the csi finale with us (as well as some doctor who and possibly something else that i've already forgotten).

the new doctor who )

the last two weeks of csi:ny )

csi finale + mention of more long-term spoilers from producer interviews a year ago )

in conclusion, [livejournal.com profile] anglepoiselamp brought a bottle of triple sec and i was able to determine that the best way to watch ancient doctor who (4th and 5th doctors in this case) is after two margaritas. i didn't really grasp even the parts of the 5-doctors film that i did watch (as opposed to walking the dog and preparing eggs-in-a-basket and apricot tea for everybody), but it sure was mildly entertaining! also, i think i had some vague tezuryo bunnies, but fortunately they are not gnawing my arms off like the more robust "dreaming on the radio" and "since last goodbye" bunnies - since they are going to have to wait till after my next two writing projects. hey, [livejournal.com profile] shiroi_chi: don't forget i want a picture of your tezuka lookalike!

[livejournal.com profile] bookshop and [livejournal.com profile] kessie, and several other people like [livejournal.com profile] bibliotech that i've also had conversations with about this, our lucky day is here: [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie, reccer extraordinaire and my absolute favourite source of cannibalised recs, has started reading doctor who and has just posted her first set of recs, 9th and 10th doctors both, mostly gen. i haven't read any of them yet though.

spring has, apparently, sprung. mini daffodils are in bloom just in time for easter, there's only snow on about a quarter of the exposed grass mud, and yesterday i bought a bikini. i'm so used to winter i have a hard time remembering not to wear extra layers, so i keep being overdressed on my walks; if there were a good way to take off a sweater and long underwear without removing your pants and jacket i'd've been on it in a flash today. meanwhile i've been reading old scripts [livejournal.com profile] hollsk sent me and laughing myself to tears. "well it's not that fucking lucky! it didn't prevent you from driving a fire truck through the wall!" those were the days.

in other news, i need more prince of tennis-related interaction. it helps me write. although really, it's disgraceful that i'd need help to write a pointless drabble. i've gotten quite rusty, what with being hung up forever on that sga harlequin. i don't think i'm ever going to post it. i may finish it someday, though, and change all the names around and try to do something with it as an original novel. i may feel differently after they start airing the new season next summer.

ps. new doctor who starting saturday!
