And you know, if Batman fic has to be srs bzness, at least it could be long and meaty and smarmy and even, if necessary, over-dramatic. Long smarm (angst. brooding. occasional awkward, manly gestures of friendship) would fit better than short vignettes, I think. Even completely un-smarmy friendship fic would be acceptable (although slightly less fun).
Ultimately, the impulse behind Batman/Gordon (the character of the canonical relationship between them - not just the spirit of the hypothetical/somewhat small slash fanon) is friendship and partnership - they're an emotonally intense but unspoken, intimately trusting pair of friends with few of the outer trappings of friendship: no casual closeness and confidences and conversations, easy emotional support, that sort of thing. Buddy cops without the buddies, which is - poignant. I'm not sure if I actually want to read slash, in fact (not that I'd ever say no to it, but I mean - ultimately), or just a friendship fixit for two pitiful guys who have no friends but each other and don't even talk together. I'd be happy with some crack where they ate pizza and, like, Gordon helped buff off a scratch from Batman's wrist guards or Batman did an emergency fix when Gordon's glasses lost a screw, and they chatted about fast cars and their favourite colours ("Really? Black's my favourite too!" "I also like dark grey." "Yeah." "And dark blue." "Blue's nice. I've always liked blue.")
Don't worry - Batman isn't my new fandom or anything. Just a new addition to the collection.
