To me, the best thing about the UK - aside, obviously, from certain key people - are the salt & vinegar chips crisps (I usually say "chips" because I speak American English, OK, and I'm not ordering at a UK restaurant which is the other circumstance I'd make exception for, but I am specifically talking about UK-manufactured classic British food here, so). Finland is no longer quite the wasteland it once was because Swedish snackfood brand Estrella now markets salt & vinegar chips here, but they're not as good as real British ones (or even American ones like Lay's and Pringles, which were all I'd had until a few years ago. They didn't sell Kettle Chips in Alabama when I was a kid).

In London I tried these three British brands (all I could find in a couple of trips to two grocery stores), plus a little bag of Kettle Chips (which are American, and I've had them before, but only a couple of times).

They're all delicious and satisfyingly salty and vinegary, but I like Tyrrell's Cider Vinegar & Sea Salt the best.

[personal profile] jamjar gave me a tiny packet of them my last morning, which I inhaled in about 1 minute, and then I took a big bag home with me. I ate half of them a week and a half ago, in the lull before my cold got really bad, and since then haven't had a chance because my nose and throat (and thus my tasting ability) haven't been working properly. It's just as well though, or they wouldn't've lasted two days. Now they're all gone and I'm in mourning. I definitely like them head and shoulders better than the usual malt vinegar flavor. It's that delicious appley note. It's a complete and unbelievable tastegasm, on a superior plane of deliciousness with maybe two or three other flavors that I love that much (fresh guacamole with ripe avocado, lime, and garlic; salsa cruda with tons of fresh cilantro; fried gyoza in vinegar-soy sauce).

For the record, I think I'd rank the remaining three in order of tastiness #2 Kettle Chips, #3 McCoy's, #4 Walker's. It's not a very big difference, though. They're distinguishable from one another, but I like them more or less equally.

I love Kettle Chips. They have a lot of good flavors, but my favorite is salt & vinegar.

It looks like Walkers is owned by Lays. It's the same bag.
