what is 'boolean' search, and who is boole?

A Boolean search means using AND NOT OR, etc. with your search terms to include or exclude certain items. ("lotr AND slash OR sex NOT saruman", for example) Boole was a mathematician.

I've been told it's a mark of my geekhood that I actually find Boolean logic really cool and fun. Ah, well.

boole (19th c.) brought together ideas about logic (aristotle etal) and math - specifing logical statements in math terms -- if A and B then whatever, if A and not B then disease, etc...
