The main reason to wish I were a regular employee right now is that as a work practice whatsit I've got to wear the uniform vest all the time, and it's a big heavy piece of black polyester twill. Lots of pockets, so maybe quite useful in the winter, but it's way too hot right now. The regular employees get a bunch of branded t-shirts that they can wear instead if they want.

The contract going through social security has its benefits, like the strictly delimited and regular hours, but I'd say from mid-June to mid-August it would be worth the tradeoff, hypothetically...

Anecdote of the day: Middle-Aged Men Who Don't Listen

MAMWDL: HEY! How much does a refill of a certain kind of gas canister cost in a certain size?
ME: I-
MAMWDL [INTERRUPTING]: I tried to look but it wasn't on the website!
ME: I'm not sure, you'd have to ask the register people; I don't have the key to the gas canisters, I-
MAWDL [INTERRUPTING]: NO NO NO, not to BUY the gas, just what does it COST!
ME: I don't really know, unfortunately. Um, if it didn't say on the website -
MAMWDL: Can't you CHECK?
ME: Um... I don't know; I guess I can try, but I don't think so.
MAMWDL: The prices aren't in this book!
ME: Exactly, this is the register book, and if they're not in here then I don't think we have them here.
MAMWDL: But you can scan the barcode!
ME: I'm afraid I don't have a scanner, and there isn't one here.
MAMWDL: But what about that!!!
ME: That's the cash register that's out of service.
MAMWDL: Not that, THAT!
ME: You mean this?
MAMWDL [IMPATIENTLY]: Yes!!! That!!! That's what I was talking about!!!
ME: That's the cash register's scanner. It's part of the register, so it won't work.
MAMWDL [WALKS AWAY MUTTERING ANGRILY]: UGH, FINE, I guess you can't help at all!!!


This guy did inconvenience me by refusing to listen, but I was pretty chill whereas he mostly wasted his own time by being a toerag. It's truly delightful to politely and warmly be no help at all to people like this. Most of the customer interactions in my department are actually very nice.
