An unreserved rec. Philosophical, set long post series (also written post series I'm pretty sure? Although not like super recently). Probably not the easiest place to start if you aren't familiar with canon though. Kat Allison is somewhat known for miserable and/or unhappy endings (but really good ones), but this isn't that: it's just serious and contemplative, but nice.

Summary:
In 1980, Duncan MacLeod jumped on a tour boat to get away from Kuyler. What if he hadn't? What if he'd found a little out of the way bookshop instead? A bookshop where Adam Pierson is trying very hard to get himself into the Watchers.

Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Highlander: The Series
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Duncan MacLeod/Methos
Characters: Duncan MacLeod, Methos
Additional Tags: First Time, Romance, Rimming
Summary:
When Duncan comes across some unexpected photographs, he suddenly sees things a bit differently...
Bookmarker's Notes:This is a classic fic with a classic plot: the accidental discovery of artsy erotic photography, the obsessive thoughts leading to questioning his identity/jerking off, the other guy being louche and breezily amused about the whole thing. In some respects it's a good fit for this fandom, in others perhaps a bit awkward - Duncan predating modern sexual orientation and subtractive masculinity for example. But the execution is note-perfect and this particular example of the trope is a standout in my memory.
Nothing But the Truth (3065 words) by Carenejeans
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Highlander: The Series
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Duncan/Methos
Characters: Duncan MacLeod, Methos
Additional Tags: Humor, Community: hlh_shortcuts
Summary:
Why would Methos tell the truth? Because he was under the influence of a deadly truth-serum?
Bookmarker's Notes:A light, fun humor piece. Characters babbling happily (but unrevealingly) under truth serum is always a good time.
Still Love (7110 words) by Thyme
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Highlander
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Methos/MacLeod
Characters: Methos, Joe Dawson, Duncan MacLeod
Additional Tags: Thyme, character:realisation, declaration
Summary:
Duncan realises that Methos will always come back.
Bookmarker's Notes:"Of course he does. It's as plain as the nose on his face."
Duncan paused, consideringly. "Nothing could be that obvious, Joe!"
Dawson looked at him pityingly.
This one's early work by cupidsbow and shows signs of both: her flawless timing, pacing, and feel for structure; and also, faintly, of the tropes and clichés so many of us went through in early work.
Social Graces (25820 words) by MacGeorge
Chapters: 4/4
Fandom: Highlander: The Series
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Duncan MacLeod/Methos (Highlander)
Characters: Duncan MacLeod, Methos (Highlander), Original Characters
Additional Tags: Romantic Comedy
Summary:
Methos' contented, safe life in London is turned upside down when his Scottish friend suddenly shows up.
Bookmarker's Notes:A rollicking sexual comedy that features almost as much rearrangement of sexual/romantic connections as A Midsummer Night's Dream, with Methos as Puck.
