In which Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Knight and Deputy Field Director for the Division of Historic and Archival Resources on Coruscant, misses breakfast, documents a very old temple, drinks quite a lot of tea, and encounters a curious piece of antiquated technology.

The way that happened was that after I ran out of Smallville, and then Deep Space Nine, and then Due South, I started trying to think of what other fandoms I read about the same time that might be useful to revisit. But I recently went back through Highlander (which I read for much of 2004-2005), and I've reread SGA (which appeared in 2005) much more recently than the others. I originally read Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan (then TPM), in contrast, in... 2002, maybe, or maybe 2001? And I have revisited the fandom in the past, but I think the last time was probably pre-2011, so it was the longest gap I could come up with. There's a whole new era of this pairing now informed by all the new Disney-Star Wars canon, even though, rather amusingly, one of the principal characters was already dead before Attack of the Clones. The Master Apprentice archive, which was where I initially read the pairing, has also now been imported to AO3, so there's both new and old to browse side by side.

I think a lot of the writers were probably drawn in by the new shows too, or drawn back at least. I think the fandom was basically dormant for a long time but apparently they're running challenges and stuff now.

I also think that there's been a Prequel Rennaissance now, considering most of my Star Wars friends are prequel/KOTOR nerds and don't really care that much for either the Sequel Trilogy or the new shows. They're people who never stopped being active in the Star Wars fandom, but who have been bolstered and energised by new people coming in, and want to head off the "Prequel Bad" that often follows the fandom around.

I think a new injection of fans in one area of fandom always results in a certain spillover to the other versions and variants, like Star Trek TOS after the 2009 movie or Sherlock Holmes book canon after the movies and shows or Legolas/Gimli after The Hobbit(s). Having an armature, so to speak, of older fans in that corner of the fandom already there probably makes it much more likely that some of them will stick around and settle into a healthy fandom ecosystem!
