I compromised about replacing my mended merino tshirts by getting a couple of cheaper ones on sale from North Outdoor, a Finnish brand that's cheaper but somewhat lower quality than Icebreaker. Their stuff isn't itchy anymore now - the technology in spinning and knitting merino finely by machine really is advancing all the time and getting cheaper constantly, and it's great. Just three years ago theirs were itchy!
Anyway, the good news is I absolutely love my new 150-weight tshirt. It's so soft that it feels almost like bamboo. Wax didn't believe it was pure merino when she picked it up.
The bad news is it's so fine that it's a bit transparent. The shirt is pale yellow and the bra I wore today was malachite-colored, and it was definitely visible. But this isn't the only garment I own that works only when worn with similar tones underneath, so I guess I'll have to deal. I have a gray one that may work.
My 210-weight tshirt is less of a problem, but even though it's not itchy, it's also not as incredibly silky and smooth.
