now YOU, TOO can be a college shrink! just follow these simple steps.

1. legal pad is absolutely essential, as is illegible scrawl. you will want to doodle while your patient talks.
2. sit in leather chair. recline at your ease. frown, but don't look too concerned. you're striving for urbane detachment.
3. you should say, "i think i remember that you were having some problems with the medicine" as if you really know exactly what you are talking about but want to be magnanimous by allowing the Weak Female Specimen the opportunity to speak.
4. your patient will probably babble excessively about her side-effects in an overly-dramatic manner. this is normal; she, being female, has a weak mind. don't soothe her too much, as you run the risk of reinforcing her undue stress on simple matters such as lack of nourishment.
5. listen to everything she says while doodling assiduously. repeat it to her and ask if that is all she's concerned with. if, for example, she has caught on fire or spontaneously collapsed. this subtle mention of other possible side-effects will help her to realize that hers are comparatively mild.
6. if she says "no" you should ask the question again, phrased differently, to ascertain that she is not lying. for example, "and you have no other concerns? nothing that i should know about? nothing else has bothered you? in the past few weeks you haven't noticed anything off other than what we've discussed?"
7. recommend that your patient resume your recommended course of medication. indicate that you think she is wise to do as you wish. weak females need this kind of periodic encouragement.
8. if her eyes start to glaze over as she nods, it is probably best to ignore this. it means nothing.

You forgot one...

9. If weak female specimin is having serious personality conflicts with a professor, prod diligently for more information. Run immediately to give transcript of session to said professor when she leaves, so professor can use intimate knowledge against her later. Patient will not be able to prove you were the sole possessor of this knowledge; thus, you are quite safe in doing so.

This little trust issue is, by the way, one of the main reasons I've never again been able to bring myself to visit a counselor. >_< It's also one reason why there's a 5-year hiatus in between the first 2 and last 2 years of my BA.

I wish it weren't true-- and I wish you had someone better to go to! It sucks when people in power can't be trusted. :(

I don't know much about how the process works at your school (or mine for that matter) but you should never be forced to stay with a counselor who makes you in any way uncomfortable or who you don't click with. If there isn't a way you can request the switch, you should try and get your parents to call (at GW the only way to get certain offices to notice you is screaming parents). Also, you might want to try going through a woman's center or something like that, they may have some sway or the ability to reccomend other resources.

*hugs* You shouldn't have to stay with icky shrink!

exactly. never stay with a shrink you don't like. my first psychiatrist was competent, ethical, the works: I just couldn't stand him. sessions were completely unproductive. the only thing I got out of it was a prescription. found another therapist whom I liked & got along with, and situation improved immeasurably.
