It's annoying, but I see why they had to do it, similar to why FF.net just decided to take down *all* of their NC-17 fics. Even though a lot of the R fics are a bit beyond R these days.

Stupid lawyers.

Actually, it filters out search engine referrals so kids can't accidentally find it while looking for "safe" HP fic. So while they can still read it, the responsibility is on them to register, and not the site owners. So, y'know, they can't claim to have been innocently searching for HP crap and instead stumbled on hardcore porn, horrors.
