a;sldkfja;ljd lj messing up my poll! let's try this again.

define total disclosure as complete and total honesty, which may or may not be considered a prerequisite for or an integral part of complete and total trust.

My translation of "significant other" was life partner. Not sure if that was what you intended...

i'm not sure i require it to be that permanent. like, say, 'tentative life partner,' maybe. 'prospective life partner'? or, hm, 'current life partner.' some people just aren't monogamous, or are serially monogamous, but they'll still have that other person as a kind of pillar of their lives.

I just meant, like, the difference between "someone you've been dating for a while" versus serious long term relationship. If it was someone I'd be involved with for two months, that whole question would be very different.

Hmmm, see I'd answer these but I fear my strange best-friend-as-extension-of-self situation is a tad unusual and should not be held up as a categorical imperative for anyone else... plus I don't have a S.O. so I really have no idea on that front. But if it matters to you, just take, "Anne and only Anne gets nothing but the whole truth" as my answer to all of the above :)

*nods* I'll totally second that, only replace "Anne" with "Katie".

But also not so much with the SO. *gazes at to-do list*

i don't think it's skewed. i know of people who feel that way, which is why i included the possibility.

barring presents and surprise parties and the like, from whom is it acceptable to withhold an answer, misdirect, or lie when asked a direct question?

I do not think lying is ok, just to say. It is almost always okay to withold an answer, I think. I shouldn't, for example, be required to tell anyone personal things about myself if I don't feel comfortable.

But if I've done something I shouldn't have, misdirecting or refusing to answer is a bit of a cop-out. And a non-answer will probably answer for me anyway, eh? heh.

GOOD poll :-)

well, it's possible you didn't feel something was any of someone's business, but say, if your significant other asks you something and you're not comfortable answering, is it ok to:

a) mislead?
b) flat refuse to answer?

i'd say no to both. it seems to me that that kind of a commitment comes with an obligation to honesty. but this poll's interesting if you look at the results. other people's opinions varied more than i thought they would.

erm, geeze. Ignore that part about whose friend I am! I was commenting in two journals at once and got confused about how I got to each.
