Virtual memory is the best thing ever! Basically (as best as I understand from my roommate, as I'm not much with computers in the technical sense...) it lets you use some of your storage memory as program-running memory (see, can't remember which is RAM and which is the other). So if you've got heaps of space to keep stuff on your hard drive, but can't open Photoshop if Explorer and Outlook are open (this was my problem), you can allocate some of the storage memory to run programs (but I don't think it cuts down on your storage space). On my Mac, I think it's under Memory in the Control Panels... I'm looking around for it on the work pc and can't find it... do a search, I guess?
Okay depending on what OS you have, I have XP so I will tell you how to do it from there.
1. Right click my computer and select properties. 2. Click the Advanced tab. 3. Click Settings under the Performance section. 4. Click the Advanced tab. 5. Under the Virtual Memory section, click Change. 6. Depending on how much memory you have increase the numbers in those two boxes under custom size. But don't go over what you currently have.
Also you might want to consider buying some more memory for your computer. Find out what kind you need thought before buying it. If you need help figuring that out, I could help you there too.
:) thanks! i hope the virtual memory thing will work, though. this computer is almost brand new. but v/ sad for a new computer to not be able to handle... a whole bunch of programs running at once.
So did it work? Even though it might be new, there might not be enough memory to support a whole bunch of programs.
To find out how much memory you have follow these steps:
1. Press start. 2. Right click my computer. 3. Select properties. 4. Under the general tab, at the bottom should list ___ MB of RAM.
That is how much ram you have, or memory you have.
If you have less than 256 MB, you might want to consider getting some more. I had the same problem and when I got more memory, it made my comp 10 times better. I can run so much now.
If you have any other computer questions feel free to ask me. I will be happy to help!
you've been really helpful, so thanks! :) i haven't got the message about not enough virtual memory since i increased the file, so i'll wait a little while and see if it comes back.
