i have the first-line exercise thingies to thank for leading me to re-read [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon's highly enjoyable much a-q about nothing, a picard/q janeway/7 story that's cuter than a button (pronounced correctly with the glottal stop, not with the "t").

picard/q makes virtually no sense, but it's nonsense that's so much fun to read.

meh.

it's 9 am. meh. what's this annoying business with shrinks? what if i don't want to get dressed and eat breakfast and go outside?

i need to study japanese today and figure out the words to use for linguistics (because, of course, the ideas don't like to solidify into something that makes sense in a useful way).

i think i need about five. i wonder if they have to be actual *words*? well, they can't be emoticons. and they can't be phenomena, ie, the difference between the same sentence with/without punctuation, because that's got to depend too much on person/subject matter/context.

i think i must have slept too long already. meh.

kk, i read it. i will reply after the shrinkage. but thanks very much! how nice and snuggly of you.

"What's the name of that condition where you only have one testicle? Anyone know? Geoff, you're our expert on it...."
-Professor Taubman, Colloquium 14, trying to remember the term for monorchism

[speaking of geoff, can anyone in new england tell me when hetty wainthropp investigates comes on around here? massachussetts? pbs?]

yet more about the art and craft of writing... all the way from nigeria! full of the charming mistakes of non-native speakers. and, apparently, a kind of spam that i have yet to recieve (?!). here.

i've quite a bit of greek. probably weeks' worth. however, japanese oral exam is tomorrow, so that's what i'm going to study first, which isn't to say i'm going to do either particularly soon: i'm so foggy and blurry right now. why was i allowed to go to bed at 2 am? ok, i'm taking a nap, going to work, studying japanese. why is it that your mailbox is crammed with spam when you don't want it, but your dad won't even email you back when you're petulant and cranky? *fumefume*

ok, tentative list.

words used in im to indicate emotion/state-of-mind, outside of emoticons, which could conceivably be misinterpreted:

*shrug*
*sigh*
"hmmm"
"hahaha" [and/or "hehe"?]
"um."
[edit: "oh"?
"oops"?
"anyway"]
[edit 2: annoyance words, perhaps? "gah"
"meh"
"blah" and "bleh"--maybe all four of those count only as one--do you all think of them as really the same thing?]
[edit 3: "eep"
"meep"]

um too similar to hm? c'mon, someone. gimme some input.

maybe "to indicate emotion" isn't quite what i'm going for so much as "to replace other components of a face-to-face conversation." some of those substitute for tone of voice, some for facial expression...

um. all of a sudden the alt codes for special characters are working again. which they haven't for weeks! á é í ó ú ñ. okaaaaaaaay. groovy. i guess.

hey, my advisor ok'd the list of words, so now i just pick which ones i want and make up the scales.

the example for mother asks for a rating of 1(first word) to 7(second), 4 being neutral to the criteria, with the following pairs of connotations/qualities:

good/bad, kind/cruel, weak/strong, beautiful/ugly, nice/awful, active/passive, positive/negative, heavenly/hellish, reputable/disreputable.

i plan to just modify those scales and the question. for instance, what i want is how the word makes you interpret the other person's intent.

the list, to be narrowed down to somewhere around 4-6, hopefully in related groups to help find shadings of meaning:

*shrug*, *sigh*
"hmmm," "hahaha," "um," "oh"
"gah," "meh," "blah" and "bleh"
"eep" and "meep"

hm. some people are really full of shit. have you noticed this? [edit: no, really, really, really full of shit. *seethe*]

i think i'm going to have to go to dinner and thence to mad studying in just a minute.

look at my randomness! no, i promise it only looks random. it isn't really that bad. there's a greek exam review at 9 pm tonight, which is way too fucking late, but i suppose i can always leave early if it's as useless as i suspect it might be, but i've really GOT to go. and, fuck, when i come back from it it'll be too late to do the greek homework for tomorrow. how much time does she think we have for studying? not that i've done much of any today. the shrink appointment threw me off--he said things that made sense. what is the world coming to?

ok, roommate is making chicken soup and it smells SO GOOD, and aaaaagh, i can't be hungry. i just ate dinner. chicken stir fry and raisin bread toast and wheat bran and peanut butter icecream with rainbow sprinkles.

damn. that smells SO GOOD. ohhhhhh.
