tempted to make a 'my fandom is better than your fandom' icon. alas, it may be true of the source material in many cases, but it's probably pretty immaterial when it comes down to the fandom itself.

supposed to do an errand for mom at 10:30, which is why i can't fall asleep. since the bank cleverly mailed me two check cards and two pin numbers, i have to drive into northport to test them on the atms and see which goes to which (and throw the one i haven't signed away). my hands are so dry they hurt. am going to become a moisturizer addict. it feels like typing leaves hairline cracks in my knuckles.

my dad thinks i should cultivate a laissez-faire policy towards irritating things and people to avoid driving myself nuts. he says he outgrew being annoyed with everything too. can i trust this story? ^.^ ...and speaking of annoying, the series of unfortunate events books were cute for about 74 pages of the first one. i actually read three before i quit. since they are essentially the same story over and over again, that's actually a fairly generous amount of time spent on them.

i have a hard time comprehending this much sucking, no pun intended. @.@ maybe i need to step away from the archive for a while. webmail is still down, and they want you to use outlook instead! how loathesome. when the worker who does most of the construction here came in this morning and said 'good morning,' i was unexpectedly overtaken by curiosity and barely stopped myself asking him exactly how much his job sucks. in other news, irrepressibly friendly people are very hard to understand. if i like them, i don't mind that they talk to me, but i'm sure they must get tired of the blank look i wear while i try to figure out why they would wish to initiate a conversation. the driving-over-the-river-to-use-atm is so annoying.

You look out of the kitchen window and you shake your head and say low,
"If I could believe that stuff, I'd say that woman has a halo,"
And I look out and say, "Yeah, she's really blond,"
And then I go outside and join the others, I am the others,

most of the nebula-nominated novellettes are available online this year.

halo, by charles stross, from asimov's. The bandwidth out here sucks dead slugs through a straw... a good chunk of the ship’s communications array is given over to caching: the news is whole kiloseconds old by the time it gets out here. i'm still a little dizzy from this one's end (which could possibly be a flaw, but it's very good nonetheless). i'll save the others to read later, when it's had time to soak in.

ooooh!

look, an astonishigly, unusually good snape/harry. it claims, in the notes, to be a wip, but there's no information about updates. it could just be unfinished. still.

i haven't really been shopping in months. in the last week i realized i actually needed some things--i don't have enough short-sleeved shirts for an alabama summer, here, because i left a few in massachusetts, and yeah, i knew i was going to be here for the summer but i was crazy, apparently. i don't even remember packing. it's like there's a big black curtain over that part of my memory. so anyway, i only bought three shirts, but it's so strange and weird and wrong, like i was trying to move back in time. the mall is exactly the same as it was when i was in eleventh grade. i don't feel the same urge to shop that i did then, luckily. it was fun, but i did it for under an hour and a half, and that was enough to make me sick of it. and, in some kind of brilliant stroke of adaptation for the survival of the species or something, i've become very reluctant to spend money. cautious! tight-fisted, even. my favorite aunt would be so proud. and speaking of my favorite aunt... meh. i'd like to see my family her.
