walking in the snow
4 Jan 2005 12:04 amwe were out walking for nearly an hour, perry and i. after an initial misunderstanding when i wouldn't go down the river walk and he thought he must be in trouble, i had to carry him because he wouldn't go anywhere. once i carried him past the stairwell he realised i meant to keep walking, and his ears and tail perked right up. then to make him feel better i let him lead--a merry chase up and down and all around the playgrounds, the little-used paths behind buildings--two times round in a giant circle through the parking lot, and we passed the same woman ironing in front of a lit groundfloor window both times.
he wasn't reluctant to go home at all, except when he smelled something interesting on the second floor landing. i gave him a treat then, and he crunched it up on the couch. now he's just come in to check on me, with his tail all flagged and his little ears standing out on the sides of his face and his eyes all bright.
he's so happy. he loves to sniff new things even more than he loves to sniff, in general, and he still hasn't learned all about his environs here. plus he's barely seen snow, and never ice.
the snow right now is in a thin layer that lets the tips of grass stems poke through, and it's hardened to ice-like consistency so that it's springy in some places and resistant to footprints, and in others makes a satisfyingly audible crunch under your feet.
