I just started to think I understood the lyrics to a Kent song. (The song was Vy från ett luftslott.)

And I'm not even drunk. Or high.

I want this library. *___________* Picture puzzle linked by [livejournal.com profile] mecurtin.

In the spirit of rainbows, have this photo of Death Valley after rain which I think was taken by my Crunchy Aunt, but it might've been my Wonder-Killing Grandpa Bob (as opposed to my Libertarian Grandpa, Ray). (I managed to write like ten thousand words of Bob/Ray before I realised that they shared my grandpas' names that one time. Probably because I address them as "Grandpa Bob" vs "Grandpa [Lastname]" in person, when not simply "Grandpa"). It could also be a random e-mail forward from Gpa Bob, though. He does that with Curious Facts and Nature Stuff. Anyway, it's nice to look at something that's not dark, cold and snowy.

Please note that I would never actually organise a library by colour. I might subdivide into genre before alphabetising, like my parents do. At the present time we don't have enough books (*sob*) to genrify.

So [livejournal.com profile] perhael and I were having a friendly debate about the Meet The Folks episode of NCIS, whatever it's called, wherein Tony is the only one who cyber-stalks Gibbs and hacks into his files (Tony can hack?), and Gibbs's father gives Tony a cardigan apparently purchased at the Gap, and Gibbs hasn't spoken to his father in decades because he brought a date to Gibbs's wife's funeral, and Gibbs flashes back to his youth and takes home a sweet, sweet car.

Earlier Lilah and I had decided that Agent Afloat was clearly the precursor to first-time Tony/Gibbs, because besides his extra smiles and expressions of affection, and all his stressing about getting Tony back, Gibbs actually Takes the First Step by ~shaking his hand.~

The question in our minds was whether it was (a) a handshake of Bow-Chicka-Wow, ie the indication that Gibbs was about to haul Tony down to the Basement of Seductive Woodwork; (b) the handshake of Intent, ie Gibbs was just giving Tony fair warning that he was going to court him speedily, but he let him get a good night's sleep before hauling him into bed; or (c) the handshake of Gibbs coming to terms with their Looove in some way that doesn't lead to immediate sex, like if he was going to let things develop slowly or something.

Because, see, when they're visiting Gibbs's hometown, and Gibbs is understandably off-balance, it kind of read to me like besides being off-balance about his unhappy teenage memories and his wife and his dad he wasn't entirely certain of Tony. I was reading a hint of wistfulness and also tension or apprehension into his manner, directed at and caused by Tony respectively. [livejournal.com profile] perhael agreed with me, but the question is: Was it just new relationship jitters, everything being too new to feel completely established (scenarios a and b)? Was it Meet the Parents jitters, cause it's not like Gibbs was planning to introduce Tony to his dad yet (still a-b)? Or was it is-this-really-going-where-I-think-it-is second-guessing because their relationship is still at a stage of unspoken and tenuous mutual understanding, and Gibbs is suddenly wondering exactly how mutual the understanding was (scenario c), or whether it was a good idea after all?

This was my first reading, that they hadn't actually quite had sex yet. The wistfulness, or longing might be a better word, that I was reading into those series of Looks when Tony made his entrance at the general store, Lilah argued convincingly and decidedly for the new relationship interpretation. It's not that I can't see that, of course, I totally can. (Tony in particular seems more assured, but then, Tony is nothing if not good at picking up signals, so even if they were in a place of mounting UST and mutual understanding, just the understanding would be enough.) But I can still see both of them. I'm still batting them back and forth in my head a few days after.

Before now I did not know how the Canadian government worked at all, but this link explains what's been going down there lately (there's a drama, if you haven't noticed) in an easy to understand and reasonably concise way. Link from [livejournal.com profile] eleveninches.

So I've started reading Merlin fic. At first I was thinking I might watch the show, but then I caved and read some without watching and now I'm not sure whether I'll want to or not - I have peculiar preferences about historical and historically inaccurate media that don't really make any sense, although it's possible there's an internal logic I haven't bothered to articulate; and I have definite preferences about the King Arthur legend, which I'm very fond of because it's my mom's Favourite Story-Thing!! the way that the Persephone/Hades - Inanna - Cupid/Psyche - East of the Sun, West of the Moon constellation of myths is mine. Since I share much of my mother's taste in literature, I've read most of her books on the subject.

(This entire paragraph is going to be a digression, but I just can't go by without talkiing about my favourite Arthur legend literature - I love that Saberhagen incorporates it into his Dracula novels, but I'm not too keen on the way he actually handles it there; on the other hand I adore Merlin's Bones. And I really like the incorporation of the legend, as completely and utterly silly as it is - cosmic Quiz Bowl LOL - into The Dark Is Rising. I really hate The Mists of Avalon, which is actually my mom's favourite because it's all feminist~. I mean, I'm a big fan of feminist myself, but I just can't stand anything MZB's ever written. I've never read The Once and Future King because I didn't get around to it, or Le Morte d'Arthur partially because it was boring but also because my parents told me that whatsisface wrote it while in prison for the rape of a teenaged girl, and I refused to read any more after that. But my favourite literary treatment is one I got from the Science Fiction Book Club in high school, and it was a reprint of something from the 50s or 60s I think, not by anybody particularly famous or anything, and I honestly can't remember who it was by or what it was called. Hopefully I'll be able to find it some time when I visit my parents. Failing that... [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's King Arthur in 15 Minutes.)

Anyway, when my delicious network page was suddenly full of Arthur/Merlin bookmarks, it was quite difficult to resist, especially because if I didn't I'd have to go hunting for things to read further afield. Easier by far to follow links from established link-ers. The fandom's in that young, playful stage where most of the fiction is short and really gay and full of enthusiasm, too. I'm getting the impression that the show is really, really gay, even more so than you'd usually think from reading slash as an introduction to canon. Which makes quite good reading! And it's highly accessible to non-watchers, I think, which is always a plus in fandom.

It'd never have occurred to me to slash Arthur with Merlin, as it apparently did to the show's creators/writers, so that's something. Although really, the two of them are a bit gay in The Dark is Rising too, albeit in a kind of weird, We're-Both-Gods-Or-Something-And-Anyway-It's-Like-Slashing-Gandalf-With-Gandalf way.
