cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (<.<)

Before I left my psychiatrist's office today, he said to me, "If you dare to use your email again, you can contact me when you want another appointment."

I LOLed. I really like him, even if he is a fan of Freud. And, okay, Freud is cool, in a He-So-Crazy-And-Ludicrous way (and also it's not like the dude's a therapist, and how much harm can Freud do with prescription medication?). He says psychoanalysis is the dominant school in Finnish psychiatry. I suppose it would be impolitic to say anything scathing about that. Maybe he just thinks all problems are rooted in childhood, not that all problems are rooted in penis envy. Or something.

Also he asked me if I'm afraid to open my mail because I think it's going to be a letter from the university going, essentially, "Hey, what are you doing?" Of course that's ridiculous - all the expectations and pressures about school are coming from me, it's no concern of the school's if I don't do whatever-it-is, and for that matter, I'm not even unusually slow by Finnish standards. I admitted that I know intellectually this is impossible. I'm surprised I don't have nightmares about it, though. That would totally be my worst fears come to life.

Psychoanalysis has moved beyond Freud. More childhood, less penis envy.

My mother's a psychologist of the psychoanalytic type, so I have to say that, it's in the daughter contract.

Even in high school we learned about a few post-Freudian schools of psychoanalysis, but I wasn't much more impressed with them, either. At least they weren't as crazy, but I find the entire concept of a single early event shaping the rest of one's life ridiculous. It sounds appropriate for literature, but the idea that it could apply to people seems instantly counter-intuitive.
