i have just consumed a fair to middling quantitiy of white chocolate--wise, not wise? hmmm. you be the judge.

definitely wise: agreeing to make sugar cookies for the daddy-pie's work tomorrow. or, well, he wanted pumpkin bread, but the specific request was just for 'baking' and cookies are easier and more fun to decorate. so that's that, eh.

EEEEEE TICKETS ARE IN MY HOT LITTLE HAND.

it was beautiful. it did justice to the book, which was far more than could be hoped for (or, well, before seeing fotr anyway). it was a good movie and i loved it. many of the changes that were made were necessary or positive.

a lot of changes were made that weren't, imo, although in many cases the reasoning behind them was evident. i definitely think some mistakes were made in the choice of departures from canon.

some other departures from canon were good.

wtf? list...

-faramir's characterization. buh-bye.
-saruman possessing theoden. nice cinematography, unnecessary drama.
-elrond being an asshole. i see a possible reasoning here but don't agree with it.
-the men from the south. pretty, but i'm not sure i like the 'hi, i'm from the mughal empire, complete with kohl' look considering recent us history and heretofore unfounded wack-job claims of racism in lotr.
-gimli being comic relief maybe two or three too many times.

yay list

-galadriel talking to elrond, and then the elves showing up from both places together instead of aragorn having gone to fetch them. the addition of the elves to helm's deep.
-eowyn, eowyn, EOWYN. they didn't add a lot, granted. still. EOWYN.
-the old friendship evident between aragorn and legolas, even if the chemistry there edges on sexual sometimes which makes me squirm, as i don't approve the pairing. maybe orli and viggo can't help it.
-merry and pippin's added characterization, talking the ents into the war.
-the nice blending of the timelines towards the end, with sam's speech which was just short of cheesy. a nice save from the Faramir Fuck-up, although nothing can completely reconcile me to it.
[edit: because [livejournal.com profile] sinsense reminded me, my earlier, shorter thoughts, a bit, on legolas/aragorn and legolas/gimli can be found here. yes, i saw legolas/gimli, and it made me very happy, and it was visible even through the comic relief stuff. nothing that could not have been taken as friendship, of course. but when you put it together with the secretive looks passing between legolas and aragorn, you get cim having bunnies that she beats away half-heartedly with a stick.]

also, elijah's fingernails are gross in a charming way.

I think that sums up all of my "wtf?" reactions to this section.

WORD.

And it was always about how short he was. It was a little odd. I guess they used him as a respite from the UNCEASING MELODRAMATIC TENDENCIES of the rest of the cast. Rearrgh. Tolkien is melodramatic on his own, don't add lingering glances and weighty tones to it. :] I'm glad you got to see it. There was so much Legolas/Gimli, I was a little wowed.

nonsense. once it was about gay dwarves!

...okay, no it wasn't. but um. aragorn made a joke, thereby making it the best scene in the movie.

it was either that or aragorn shoving open the doors at helm's deep.

well, okay, yes. but what about dom's rugged stubbliness? lickable, yes? recognizably male? ::tries and fails to think of other attractive manly men:: ... so... uh... well, it's because he's so thin and sensitive and beautiful and brooding, AND ALSO manly and stubblified.

Yes. Aragorn was mysteriously sexier in this movie, methinks. My mind leapt alive with Viggorli.

he was sexy enough before, dude. although, yes, sexier. mmmguh.

amen, sista. you picked out pretty much exactly what i thought about the movie, although i would add to the "wtf" list the apparent quickness of victory at Helm's Deep once Gandalf showed up. also to the "yay" list, i would add the fabulous work they did with Gollum.

I agree with both. Gollum was almost seamless... they're getting pretty good with those CGIs.

complete with kohl' look considering recent us history and heretofore unfounded wack-job claims of racism in lotr.

i was bothered by the kohl etc as well but mainly bc i was hoping they would do something to counteract the racism that i do see in the books.

not picking a fight, just throwing 2 cents in.

after seeing it a second time, faramir bothered me over so slightly less. but still... hmph.

hmm. obviously the men of the south are of a different race; but it's not allegorical. they're not made into any specific thing, slavs or africans or... anyway.

ok, just deleted a bunch of blither to sum up my point as such: i think it's as sketchy in the book as it is in the movie. even if he didn't intend it as allegory per se. the bad guys certainly weren't fair of skin. but i was hoping they would be more careful in the movie. that was disappointing.

Re:

Date: 20 Dec 2002 07:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com
well, they weren't fair of skin, but i don't think he made ANY indications or descriptions that would have suggested 'islam' to ANYONE (unless 'south' does that for you? --well, possible, i suppose). whereas the movie was like, 'oh, well, africa is to the south of england lalala islam is evil lalala'--and in conjunction with comments some of the actors have made lately, like i think lijah, saying 'given the times' people like lotr for giving them a 'black and white good versus evil' with the good winning, and then sean a's anti-terrorism and pro-war commercials... it's getting uglier.

pro war commercials? ugh. gross. and elijah... ick. oh, how depressing.

i remember (without remember exactly why - south and elephants are certianly a start... and there's dark skin and dark hair, yes?) that the book made me think 'african' and nothing more specific than that. but that was enough to bother me.

i'm in complete agreement about the movie here. i would have thought they would be smart enough to go out of their way to make the southrons look UN-arabic. grmph. people are stupid.
