it may or may not be remembered that i was supposed to be able to use the computer again a week ago monday. probably not, in that i dropped off the face of the planet while in kansas. i had some disagreements with the computers of my relatives. after i'd restarted my grandfather's garage-sale find six times and reconnected more like ten i just didn't have the patience anymore. the wedding was lovely, and the bride and groom, who are presbyterian (now) and each only 18, declined to serve real alcohol at the reception. they made their toast with welch's sparkling grape juice. the candles wouldn't light, but otherwise it went well. my dress didn't fall down, and i didn't step on my groomsman's foot even though he's the root of all evil (ie my cousin panda's ex).

some pictures or other will be forthcoming after my fingers remember how to type again.

one of the little banners to click on on hotmail today:

are you smarter than j. lo?

...well, i wonder.

met connie willis--the toastmaster at deepsouthcon--and got two of her books, including the new passage. as i said to my mother, i admire it "not unreservedly"--though it is very, very good. the flow towards the end is too different. it didn't feel quite right. then again, her plot-based writing is magnificent, and sparklingly witty and such. reading real novels again is so luxurious. most fanfiction just can't stand up to the comparison.

speaking of which, i'm now determined to see aotc. at the memphis in (2004?) room party, connie was talking about it, specifically as a source for pickup lines: "i don't like sand. sand is hard, and rough. not like you. yoooouuuu're soooooooft." she said to me, "would YOU fall for that?" (it depends, of course, on whether the future evil overlord in question has a pervy hobbit fancier t-shirt to offer me, and so i told her).

1) Do you read hobbitslash?

every now and then.

2) If so, what pairing(s)?

frodo/sam and merry/pippin, because other combinations of them just seem silly and counterintuitive, and i don't care very much about the other hobbits. bilbo is nice enough, but. hem. and then no one else is very interesting. and i don't like rosie, and i REALLY don't like rosie threesomes.

3) Do you write hobbitslash?

well, i have. i'm not sure if i'll get back around to it again.

4) If so, what pairing(s)?

see above.

5) And what's your pen name?

cimorene.

6) How did you get started reading and/or writing hobbitslash?

well, i read the whole trilogy about two weeks before the movie came out and when i was halfway through fotr i emailed [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon to ask her where the hobbitslash of which she had spoken could be found (she mentioned it in a trek community long ago). and lo and behold, i found the least expected archive. i started writing "waiting for courage" the night we got back from seeing the movie, even though it's all book canon. it took me a few weeks to finish. by that point, i had exhausted the archive (which was, at the time, very small).

7) For how long have you been in the fandom?

i read the hobbit in middle school. otherwise, i plunged into it in the week before the movie came out, when there were still fewer than 100 on tolkien_slash. (mind-boggling, no?)

8) If you are an author, list the titles of your fics like a good little self-promoting git so we can all track them down *muahah*:

waiting for courage (f/s), crush (m/p), and promise (l/g)

9) Character kinks?

careful and thoughtful characterization exploring sam/frodo. there should be more of it.

10) Character squicks?

poor characterization. just, no.

11) Do you belong to any of the mailing lists/message boards? If so, which?

tolkien_slash, hobbitslash, slashlords, lxf, tralala. the shire and fellowshippers. i don't actually read any of those lists, just post to them. and that not anymore, perhaps.

12) Favorite author(s)?

cara loup, adrienne and bill the pony. mcee had one that quite impressed me, i recall, too.

13) Favorite series (or series plural)?

not sure i have any.

14) Favorite story (-ies)?

you know, i have a recs page that's quite detailed.

15) Are you an artist, i.e. Do you draw?

yes, but not any slash or fanfiction stuff.

17) Have you ever collaborated with another artist or writer?

nope.

18) Describe your dream story--plot, players, pairing(s), who you'd like to write it/why you'd write it yourself, same for illustration, or why you'd do it all. You get the idea; anything goes. The point of this question is me having fun picking your brain, seeing what's wild and wonderful out there in the Land of Fandom Imagination.

i'm afraid i'm not very imaginative. i'd like [livejournal.com profile] wax_jism to write something else, maybe. something else strange and titillating and kinky.

my baby sister--age 10--found one of my mom's trash romances lying around this afternoon and spent the last few hours reading it (title: twins included). she thought it was terribly witty. then at 4:00 when i was to take her up to the university to meet my dad, she brought it in the car with her ("cim, i've been reading this book all day, and look! i'm almost done!").

why were we in the car? yesterday she decided to put the money she earns in an account, NOT her savings account, at the credit union. then, she could only get money out when my parents are willing to drive her there.

so today, after it had been agreed i'd take her (when she thought this morning that i couldn't fit it in she called daddy crying), we had this discussion in the car.

dad: lillian, did you bring your money?
lillian: ...oops. i forgot!
dad: hm.
me: HAHA
dad: well, i know you had at least five dollars... maybe i have some money.
me: don't banks have a minimum deposit?
dad: good point. well, we could stop by and find out how to do it and see what the minimum is...
lillian: DAD? i would be more than happy to suggest--i would be MORE than happy to suggest that.
dad: yes?
lillian: i would be more than happy to suggest that we stop by home [NOT on the way] and THEN go to the bank.
dad: except that it will be closed.
lillian: when?
dad: when we would get there. well, at five... which is in less than half an hour... i don't know. maybe we could make it.

...and needless to say, they went.
