cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (international woman of mystery)
  • Last summer we watched Teen Wolf and then read a lot of it. In spite of the fact that it was so bad I needed alcohol to get through an episode, I was having fun until the creator/writer made such an ass of himself online that I got irritated anytime I saw his name. And then the same thing happened with the fanon, because for like a month every story I tried to read was irritating. It has now been added to Tumblr Savior. Hopefully the sensitivity will subside by the time a new series airs to at least allow me to watch the scenes with Dylan O'Brien in them.

  • As mentioned in the last post, my wife has gotten too far into the hockey rabbit hole. She isn't watching hockey, but she's reblogging random images of hockey players who aren't even part of the big OTPs and the other day I caught her reading a completely earnest long screed about how hockey fandom doesn't take Sidney Crosby's pain seriously enough. And nodding along thoughtfully.

  • I've been reading a lot of Hobbit fic, but, as my Pinboard account will show, not bookmarking very much of it. I've even been reading WIPs, because several of them are good. I suppose I feel at home in a high fantasy environment, and then there's all the nostalgia for Lord of the Rings (I spent years there and met my wife!).

It might be my imagination, or the fact that I was litearlly a teenager at the beginning of LOTR[/iPS], but it does seem like so far there is not as much decent reading material in this fandom as there was in that one. That doesn't really stop me from reading it and mocking the historical inaccuracies, incorrect punctuation, lack of line breaks, lapses in canon (and speaking as someone who's only read The Hobbit once as an adult and who threw the Silmarillion across the room after a few pages, the fact that I can criticize your lore is a very bad sign indeed), and general failure to understand how the world works (eg [a]the idea that putting a lot of wildflowers in a pot of boiling water would produce a paste instead of a tea followed by a pot with burnt flower bits in the bottom of it, or [b] the notion that the Company would or even could gallop their ponies into Mirkwood and keep galloping all day.) (It's quite cute for the most part. It's like the fanfic equivalent of a baby animal tripping over its own feet.) (In fact it reminds me of the stories I wrote when I was 10 or 11. I didn't have much idea how the world worked either, but I think, if nothing else from the quantity of smut, that these authors are generally a bit older.)

The overwhelming majority pairing is Thorin/Bilbo. I can't actually say it makes NO sense, although I was a bit flabbergasted when I first saw it, because they are after all the two main characters, and exactly the sort of middle-aged dudely characters that fandom loves (and white which fandom also loves). And of course, both characters have an internal character arc that sort of involves each other, even in the book, but rather more so in the movie, where they also have the advantage of the facts that
    1. Martin Freeman is, thanks to Sherlock, already a widely-acknowledged fandom sex object, and

    2. Richard Armitage apparently has an army of female fans already, plus has been styled in The Hobbit so he always looks like he's leaping off the cover of a long extremely purple romance novel about Her Viking Lover or something, one with a spine that automatically falls open to the horribly badly-written dirty bits.

The next most popular pairing on AO3 and the kinkmeme seems to be Fili/Kili, which also makes sense because, well, the Hot Dwarves. I'm more surprised that there's very very little RPF than I am by the existence of the incest, there.

After that is probably Bilbo/Bofur, which seems to be fed in equal parts on the scenes where they interact in canon, and the fact that everybody loves James Nesbitt, the twinkly Belfastian George Clooney.

So far, I am reading everything, which is very unusual for me. I'm naturally such an OTP-based reader that in the past I have multiple times imprinted in favor of an OTP simply by reading one story featuring it when I had no familiarity with canon whatsoever, and then refused to read anything else. However, I think the reason for this might be that mostly I just want to read about the characters again, preferably as many of them as possible. I was trying to make a list of which dwarves I most wanted to see more of a few days ago, and eventually decided that "how much I adore this dwarf" is basically correlated 1:1 with "how much I know about this dwarf based on his screentime". Therefore, I conclude that my preferences are meaningless, unless someone is going to convincingly write an Irish or Scottish accent, in which case I will lap it up because I adore accents.

I realized I wanted to preserve this meta for posterity a bit belatedly. I wrote it on Tumblr a few days ago in defense of the ethics of Derek's actions over s1-2 of Teen Wolf in reply to some comments. That's not the only thing I said, but it's the reason I want to save the post, anyway.

Anyway, affectingly:cimness: Allison found her inner strength, tested her relationships, and… 19 Aug 2012. Teen Wolf meta, spoilers through all of season 2. Trigger warnings: references to mental breakdown and alcoholism, murder and serial killers.

This post is going around Tumblr:

“We’ve certainly made some hints to the possibility of Stiles being bisexual.”

And my wife [personal profile] waxjism commented

#when I was a teenager #no one on TV was like me #I didn’t even know bisexuality was a thing #outside of crappy porn

#and that's why it took me #until I was 23 #to know how it was possible #to not be gay and not be straight

My parents had some gay and trans friends when I was an infant and there were a handful of gay and lesbian people in my Unitarian Universalist church over the years when I was a kid - friendly acquaintances but not actually family friends, at least until I was teenaged and got to know my dad's work bff who was gay (he wasn't a dinner party friend because his partner lived 5 hrs' drive away in Atlanta and he spent all his weekends there). ANYWAY, I never knew our queer acquaintances very well (and always was a bit starstruck and curious but too shy to like seek them out and talk to them especially), and I always kind of felt that queer people in general were a lot cooler than me so I always felt a bit let down that I was not as cool as them, and I vaguely felt that if I were that cool surely I would have known about it. I can't actually remember a time before I knew about bisexuality either.

So anyway, I was really lucky in terms of knowing about queer people and knowing some of them. But gay people still were Other to me because they're so fucking invisible and so othered in culture/media that the overwhelming message that "these people are other" was actually able to drown out the completely contradictory facts in my brain (of identifying with them quite strongly obviously myself, hence the curiosity and sort of wistful admiration or whatever)(and also of actually knowing them personally and uh, knowing they were ordinary, non-other people)! Maybe if I'd seen them (us?) in the media more I would have figured it out before age 19? I'm not really sure. But hey, even if not, it still would have been nice.

My liberal parents did their best, but to be exposed to anything gay or bi in the media you would usually pretty much have to go hunting for it. They own thousands of sff books that overflow their whole house, but after decades of voracious reading they came up with a list of probably fewer than 10 gay-protagonist sff books when I asked them a few years ago. Partly this might be them not necessarily remembering the titles/authors for all the ones they've read, not having had a particular interest until ten years ago.

I kind of wanted to write a conclusion but then my brain sort of wandered off. Hopefully tomorrow this will still look like everything I wanted to say.

I've posted meta on Tumblr twice in the last few days. I used to think I would always keep it here because Dreamwidth is the superior platform, but at the time it seemed natural to put it there because that's where the fandom is active (and the conversation is already happening).

  • Against Argent Apologia, 8 Aug 2012. Teen Wolf spoilers through 2x11. Trigger warnings: domestic violence, animal harm (not graphic). This was the result of one too many people excusing a character's fairly shockingly violent (that is: BAD) actions for various Reasons, and me getting irritated and my wife getting triggered due to her personal traumas and flailing wordlessly which is what she does when triggered. I'm better able to articulate thoughts about it even though we are generally of the same mind, because her trauma is the actual deaths of two members of her immediate family and my dad only ended up in a wheelchair.

  • Teen Wolf and strong women, 10 Aug 2012. Teen Wolf spoilers through 2x11, trigger warnings: TW s2 spoilers ). This one was just a comment that got way out of hand but this is something I care about and I wanted to save it for posterity, and also to put it in its own post because I kiiiiinda rambled on lengthily and a bit tangentially and that just didn't need to be floating around on the bottom of someone else's reblogged photoset? And after s2 I'm probably going to have a longer followup post sometime.

I feel like I should have an icon of a wolf shirt for this fandom but I worry that it wouldn't be clear what it was once it was shrunk that small...

  1. RPF AU. Dylan O'Brien is coaching Little League and Tyler Hoechlin is playing college or minor league baseball and they meetcute when he stumbles into helping out as like a recurring assistant coach. I will probably not end up writing this because my baseball knowledge is practically negative so I'd need a cowriter who knows baseball. Unless someone wants to volunteer.

  2. FPF AU. Twittertarted_up found out that Hoechlin majored in Sociology on his baseball scholarship and then we sort of outlined an AU in a fit of giddiness where Derek is the grumpy new Sociology professor doing research on pack behavior in teenagers or something and Stiles is his TA and Derek has moved his whole pack there because he got this job and they're like 'ughhh you're just using us for your research subjects!' and then I was thinking borrowing some elements from the Sentinel, like, idk, maybe Derek has published something about werewolves and Stiles seeks him out for info after Scott gets bitten (like the first meeting scene in the Sentinel <3 but in reverse and uh, with Scott). And then... well... we didn't really talk about a plot, to the best of my memory. Maybe Allison's grandpa is with some secret part of the government that wants to capture and dissect werewolves and they have to retract their research or something. If a plot is really necessary. This is probably the only one I'm likely to try to tackle since it's the only one I already know enough about (sort of) to do.

  3. FPF AU because of that thing where Derek does a kickboxing move and knees the Kanima in the head. Stiles can be playing Spiderman or some other superhero in a new superhero movie and Derek can be the head of the stunt team and in charge of training him in muay thai techniques (I just say that because Scarjo said that's what she studied. I can't actually tell one martial art from another) and Stiles has to practice strangling Derek with his thighs a lot. I'm guessing in the end they would use as many stunt doubles as possible though, since Stiles is so amazingly clumsy.

  4. FPF AU where Derek is some kind of grumpy mechanic neighbor who fixes Stiles's car for free but then he turns out to have the soul of a poet or something and be an artist-painter-sculptor. Because Wax and I watched this Beauty and the Beat youtube video that TwitterThePandoraBoxx linked to last night, and it reminded me of the recent Sense & Sensibility update From Prada to Nada, where that is the secret of the Col. Brandon character. And Wax said "Derek could be that!" right away, of course. Or a Regency one would be fun too actually. Mr Rochester (right?) meets Col Brandon, awww.

In case any of you wanted to read it, the fruits of my translation:

Smile Lines [English] (8515 words) by faviconcimorene
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Teen Wolf RPF - Fandom
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tyler Hoechlin/Dylan O'Brien
Characters: Tyler Posey, Crystal Reed, Holland Roden, Colton Haynes
Summary:

The thing about Hoechlin is that he never stops laughing. And that's freaky, because he doesn't have the kind of face you picture laughing; but he actually doesn't stop doing it, and it's hard to catch him without a smile, cheeks all dimples, eyes surrounded by smile lines.

A translation of Smile Lines by tuai.

So. Now somebody else write some more...
cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (i kind of dig this)
I translated a fic and I need a native English speaker to look over it for, you know, translation remnants - things that are out of place in English - for me. It's Teen Wolf RPF, Tyler Hoechlin/Dylan O'Brien, and around 8000 words.
cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (XD)
It would almost be embarrassing (except, you know, surgically removed the fannish embarrassmata from my brain years ago) how much time per day I spend wishing that somebody would write an RPF AU about Dylan O'Brien and Tyler Hoechlin meeting and falling in love while coaching Little League together. Certainly it's chagrinning, since I don't even know enough about baseball to write it myself if the cravings get too excruciating.
cimorene: T'Pau in full Vulcan forced marriage regalia giving the Vulcan salute to Spock (yo)
So I was translating this Teen Wolf RPF (Hoechlin/O'Brien obvs) from Spanish for [personal profile] waxjism's benefit on Friday night, because it really wasn't fair the way I was rhapsodizing about how it made me squirm in delight but she couldn't read it. (To be clear, I didn't squirm in delight because of its literary genius - it was really good and adorable and in a literary sense, slightly lyrical and beautifully paced and sizzling with US- and Emotional T, but those things alone aren't enough to prompt squirming - but because it kept hitting my fic kinks and, perhaps more importantly, I was pretty much dying to read some RPS about those dudes already when I found it.) (I did get permission from the author, so I will eventually post the result. No sense in wasting 4 or 5 hours' work.)

But the thing is that the dictionary I was having to rely way too much on translated farfullar as "gabble" first (followed by splutter, stammer, jabber, etc), and so that unfortunately stuck in my head, and - have you noticed that 'gabble' is possibly the world's least sexy verb? Or not quite, but at least one of the least sexy dialogue tags I can think of. It might be because of similarity to 'gobble' or just a simple matter of phonetics, but it sounds kind of ridiculous and embarrassing, and it kept coming up in these long twisty complex sentences, because her characterization of Dylan is quite Stilesy, and... yeah. Brain-cringe, every single time.

And also, who actually says 'gabble', anyway? Surely it shouldn't have been the first translation.
